What is Good SEO Writing?

Content Creation: Work

4. Word Counts

Search engines tend to give preference to longer blogs and articles, and for good reason — they provide more information. Good writers aim for 600 words minimum, but usually reach between 800-1,000 words.

Research has shown that search engines tend to favor “in-depth” content of at least 2,000 words — we’ve seen this work for ourselves and our clients. Many of our most popular blog posts are at least 1,500 words long. The longer your content, the more value you’re offering your readers, and the higher Google will rank your content.

5. Well Written

The main difference between expert SEO writers and casual bloggers is an eye for self editing. Programs like Google Docs and Microsoft Word make it simple — they help you correct about 90% of the issues already. Having an eye for aesthetically pleasing formatting is also important. Stay away from bulky paragraphs and long sentences that exceed 20 words. A good writer will also use plagiarism tools like DupliChecker to verify their work — this is one of the factors that affect SEO score.  Lastly, having a second set of eyes to review your work goes a long way.

1. Relevant Information

Before you set out to do any kind of SEO writing, ask yourself this: who cares?
Too often, writers just pump out content for no real reason, with no real strategy behind it. They forget that actual humans will be reading this content — you’re not writing for Google’s robots, you’re writing for real people.
Before writing, make sure you are offering some sort of value to your readers. What can you tell them that no one else can? What knowledge can you share that can’t be found anywhere else?

2. Keywords

Find out which keywords and phrases people are searching for (as well as what you can be competitive in), and make yourself a keyword spreadsheet. Keep track of how many times you utilize these keywords in your content, and use to expert SEO tools to track where you rank for each keyword relative to your competitors. Some popular tools include SEMRush, BuzzSumo, Ahrefs and SpyFu. Good writers never struggle to fit keywords into their copy. As a rule of thumb, if you feel like you’re starting to write jibberish, you’re probably "keyword dumping".

3. Audience

Content marketing success starts with knowing how to find your target audience. After all, how can you begin creating content before you know who your audience is? In addition, good SEO writers don't just fire-and-forget—they don't just post content and walk away. In fact, they regularly monitor your content using Google Analytics. See which keywords are trending, where your audience is coming from, which content gets the most engagement, etc. Collecting this information is time-consuming, but crucial for your business.
