How To Brainstorm A Logo or a Name That Is Perfect For Your Business

The competition is fierce, the pressure is on, and the ideas just won’t seem to flow. Many businesses have been there. It can be exhausting and defeating to come up with creative and effective branding. Thankfully, we’ve put together a list of brainstorming tips to create the perfect logo or name for your business.

1. Know Who You Are

The most important part of branding resides in having confidence in who you are, and what it is you are offering. This means that before you have a logo, you should have a name. A logo is a simplified expression of your brand - but without a name you won’t have much to express.

Tapping into the soul of your business requires asking yourself a few hard questions. Start with questions such as ‘What am I offering? Who am I offering it to? How am I offering it? Where am I based? What are my brand values?’. These questions will help you with the following:

2. Don’t Lock Your Brand In… Anchor Your Brand

When coming up with a name, make sure you’re not putting your brand in a box. Sticking with something hyper straightforward may seem enticing, but it’s better to have a name that provokes interest. Consider your values and anchor your brand to that. Looking at some of the biggest brand names out there, we know that they’re flexible and engaging - they’re not: West Coast Dog Groomers. If you want to model brilliance and innovation, go for a brand name that illustrates those values.

3. Choosing a Designer

The first thing you want to do is find yourself a designer you can absolutely trust. Relying on a designer to take your name, and create the perfect logo for your business may seem daunting, but if you’ve chosen well you will be in good hands. A great designer will ask you about brand values, and how to incorporate those into your logo. They’ll help you identify whether you want an edgy, clean, or pretty aesthetic. The brain processes visuals 60,000 times faster than words… so we think investing in a skilled designer is worth it if you want something punchy and memorable!

4. Be open to changing your mind.

The great thing about brainstorming is that you don’t need to settle on anything right away - in fact, we discourage it! Keeping your options open is crucial to finding the perfect logo for your business. You may initially want a pretty pink logo, but with more thought and the help of your designer you may settle on something more bold and clean.

5. Get Inspired to be Unique

Too many businesses rely on ‘popular designs’ and not their own flavour. This creates a mess of similar branding, and a tired aesthetic. Use research and statistics to inform your branding, but don’t overly rely on other businesses ideas. For example, smallbizgenius tells us that 30% of the world’s 100 leading brands include blue in their logo design. That’s a great statistic to use since it gives you a point of reference, but lot’s of freedom as well!

Don’t forget to use proper brainstorming techniques when you begin. Check out this great resource forhow to brainstorm effectively. It will be especially helpful in a team brainstorming session. We wish you all the best on your brainstorming journey, and we can’t wait to see what you come up with!
